National Coalition for Literacy Discussion List
View all threadsHello old friends,
Biden Transition Teams Announced:
https://buildbackbetter.com/the-transition/agency-review-teams/
On the education list, some familiar names here and there we worked with during the Obama years — Roberto Rodriguez, James Kvaal.
Don’t know what you are hearing, but my understanding is that while certain transition activities within executive branch agencies can’t take place until GSA acknowledges the election results, communication — including meetings — with the transition team are appropriate and permissible and I think this work is moving ahead full speed.
Linda Darling-Hammond, who I believe led the Obama transition team on education, is the team lead here as well. Unlike last time, she has already proactively taken her name out of the running for the Secretary of Education job. Biden had previously pledged to name a person who has been a teacher in this role.

Hi, Jeff,
Good to hear from you, and thanks for the reminders about familiar names. We are hearing the same things you are about moving forward, and we're in the process of identifying connections so that we can follow up on multiple fronts. Do you still have a link to James Kvaal or Roberto Rodriguez that you can share?
We sure do miss you. Going through a presidential transition without you is Just Not The Same. Don't be a stranger!

Thanks, you are too kind.
To be crystal clear, I should clarify that these are the "agency review teams” — sort of the nuts and bolts operation of the transition process…
I will possibly be talking with some of the members in the areas I work on now (energy, EPA, state — have a friend on the state team, in fact, I was excited to see) but not sure what I’ll gather on education that might be useful. And I know next to nothing about this stuff — I wasn’t actually doing national AE policy yet during the Obama transition — Art Ellison (who I think is still on this list) may have some insights. In fact, probably many people on this list who know more than I!
My only kinda/sorta experience during Trump transition was well after the traditional transition period — a March or April 2017 meeting with the Vice President’s staff w/CEF that is best forgotten… You’ll recall the Trump administration couldn’t be bothered to even name an OCTAE Assistant Security until many, many months into his term.
If I learn anything this time around, happy to share.

Hi Jeff,
We heard a bit of a different story - that the Trump administration tried to place appointees that were held up during the confirmation processes. That's what Dr. Michael Wooten told us when we first met with him.
At any rate, we at COABE felt that the last few years have been very good and quite productive. And we also very much appreciated our meeting early i2017 with the Secretary and the ongoing work with Assistant Secretary Stump.
As a side note, we have also enjoyed an enduring relationship with Johan Uvin and Dr. King from the Obama era.
