Morning all,
Does anyone have a fee schedule for taking a pleasure boat (motorized
Cat) through the Panama Canal? I have heard that it could run in the thousands
but can't find a web-site or reference. Also I have heard that you have to
hire a Captain to pilot your vessel through. Any info would be appreciated
Thanks and calm blue waters to all

the panama canal shouldn't cost you thousands.  maybe a thousand??  you do
have to hire an "advisor" and you will have to raft up with a couple of other
cruisers for the transit.  to make the trip you'll need a few extra people to
help out - mainly handling lines - and you'll want plenty of rough and ready
fenders.  all of this stuff, including the hired crew, can be easily rented
for reasonable fees.

many cruisers who do this have friends and family join them for the transit.
that way you can limit the amount of local crew you'll need aboard.  the canal
transit takes two days unless the commercial traffic is overwhelming and
they'll have the right of way.  i've never done it but everyone says, "piece
of cake".

for a good picture of what goes on during a transit look at the web site
www.yachtbarbaraann.com  in the web site go to the chapter about going to
panama.  by the way the whole web site is a "delight"  it is put up by a
family that is doing a circumnavagation about a 52' swedish built sloop.  lots
of great pictures and interesting commentaries. n they currently are in
thailand.

Went thru the Canal last March on a 40' Trawler. Total Cost about 1800
dollars including advisor, rental gear, line handlers etc. 2-3 days to
transit. Depending on where you are now and your time schedule, I might be
interrested in helping you get thru. No fee. Just looking for a free ride.
Cheers, Dan
