“Move your mountains, raise your trees, have busy areas and open spaces, move rocks to lead the eye, compare colours…” These are some of Ned‘s helpful instructions. In his course,”The Art of Seeing”, Ned teaches us to interpret or “see” a subject with an artist’s eye based on solid principles of art and design in order to create our own interesting and unique paintings.
Ned teaches with humour and wisdom gained from many years of art experience. He welcomes all questions. His critiques are always insightful. Ned has an empathy for all artists who want to express their own way of seeing the world. I am so grateful for this course which has provided a great foundation for my future studies. Thanks Ned.

 Expressive Portrait Drawing

This ONLINE workshop will concentrate on learning how to draw and construct a fine expressive portrait over three days. You will learn the simple basic proportions of the head and to develop and sharpen your eye to see the placement of the major features. We will work in Bistre Conte and/or compressed charcoal as they are very flexible and useful in learning this process. You will learn some fairly easy steps in getting the proportions and structure of the head using photographs of models that show off the structure and planal changes of the head along with a strong light and shadow pattern to work from. You will learn how to break the head down into simple value patterns and with the use of lost and found edges make a more compelling portrait. We will go over the generic structure of the individual features of the face, those being the eye, nose, mouth and ear so you get a strong understanding of these features. You will learn how to see and interpret the forms and values to get a strong likeness. Mastering the discipline and training of the mind and eye to do a good portrait will translate and help you in other areas of your art as you will become more accurate and confidant in observing and editing the important elements, whether you are doing a portrait, still life or a landscape. We will all be looking at other Artists that are doing quite exceptional work. I will give plenty of group demonstrations and individual attention through the duration of the course. You will work hard, learn a lot, indulge our humorous side and we will have a lot of fun doing it! The materials are quite simple and little expense, for learning and doing so much. www.nedmueller.co https://fredoldfieldcenter.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=77e4e85c9a098076ff77fd44a&id=1c6b4ae4c5&e=69c950edc5 m https://fredoldfieldcenter.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=77e4e85c9a098076ff77fd44a&id=e3c4741571&e=69c950edc5

The Art of Seeing, Design 101

"A good painting tells as much about the artist as the painting itself. Mueller will talk about the whole process of putting a painting together; from the first concept, to small idea and value composition studies, the use of a color study and on to the finished painting. The emphasis will not be on the finished piece but on the process of making a more successful painting. Remember, most paintings are ruined at the start, not at the end, as not enough preliminary thought is given to them. Students will work on counter- change, color harmony, and the balance of masses and shapes in size, value and color. We will talk about seeing things in a more “ Abstract” way…. not to see mountains, water, trees, etc. so literally, but to see them as an interesting arrangement of shapes and colors. One then starts to think more as an “Artist” and to find your own voice. Students should be prepared to work from their own photos and/or field studies. I will have a great large selection of photos from around the country and world..portraits, figures, and landscapes. I will critique your work each morning. The first day bring a couple of your favorite paintings or a couple you would like critiqued and each morning on Saturday and Sunday. Starts, mistakes and failures could be the order of the day, but, “We will make mistakes, work hard, and have a good time doing it!" www.nedmueller.com https://fredoldfieldcenter.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=77e4e85c9a098076ff77fd44a&id=b41daed631&e=69c950edc5

This is an Intermediate level class

 Supply List:
Oil Paints: Titanium white, cadmium yellow lite, cadmium orange, cadmium red lite, alizarin crimson, transparent brown oxide, chromium green oxide, viridian, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, ivory black. Brushes: I mostly use bristle brushes, mainly filberts and brights #2,#4,#6,#8,#10. I usually have at least two or three of each. I will use some round sables for detail or to sign my name. I mostly use ready made oil primed linen panels to paint on, anywhere from 4"x6" to 8”x10” for value or color studies. Bring a variety of sizes including 8”x10” to 12”x16" to paint on. Some places to get panels are: www.CanvasPanels.com https://fredoldfieldcenter.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=77e4e85c9a098076ff77fd44a&id=442c5db42a&e=69c950edc5 , www.newtraditionsartpanels.com https://fredoldfieldcenter.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=77e4e85c9a098076ff77fd44a&id=10b5f869bc&e=69c950edc5 , www.windriverarts.com https://fredoldfieldcenter.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=77e4e85c9a098076ff77fd44a&id=03771af1aa&e=69c950edc5 . Linen panels are a bit expensive and a good canvas panel will do. Have a good easel such as the French easel, backpack easel or one of the many good pochade paint boxes on the market. Some of them are: www.artworkessentials.com https://fredoldfieldcenter.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=77e4e85c9a098076ff77fd44a&id=5a959bc727&e=69c950edc5 , and www.openboxm.com https://fredoldfieldcenter.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=77e4e85c9a098076ff77fd44a&id=100ab83b93&e=69c950edc5 . Have a good size container to clean your brushes with and a small cup for your medium. I use odorless Turp to clean brushes and for my medium. I usually use a glass or plexiglass palette, wood palettes are fine as are the fold out palette pals. Please, no paper palettes. I have a palette knife and/or a scraper to clean my palette and a roll of soft paper towels to clean my palette and brushes with. Bring some soft 6B or 8B graphite pencils and sketch paper or a few sheets of layout bond paper for value studies..you could also do them in oils by premixing four or five value puddles. Equipment and paints do get expensive, and do the best you can, but cheap paints, brushes and panels can really keep a person from doing their best work. The first day we will probably just be doing smaller value studies to get some ideas and designs for more finished work. Doing some color studies in the 6"x8" to 8"x10" range will also resolve a lot of issues before doing larger paintings. We will focus on the “process” of creating a painting and so polished, “finished” paintings may not be the order of the day and also takes off the pressure of trying to get that finished painting that can get in the way of learning the process, which is more important. Bring some of your own favorite photos to work from and I will have a large selection of my photos that you can work from.. I have great photos of landscapes, figures, and portraits from all over the country and world for you to use! Bring a good sense of humor and we will work hard and have a good time doing it!!
