Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsTWINS is moving north having left Jacksonville almost two weeks ago. Our detour up the St Johns river was fantastic....we will be back there! We will be taking our next break at the Corinthian YC on the Chesapeake/Potomac. Presently moored at the new FREE mooring balls at Carolina Beach.
As predicted and expected....it’s been hot, damn hot!! Lots of generator use. Bugs have not been too bad though. We have not seen a soseeum or mosquito. Had quite a few greenheads but handy fly swatters have dispatched those that dared to linger....no bites to report. We enjoyed a couple of days at Shelter Cove/Disney on Hilton Head with Golden Loopers Mint Julep.....4th of July fireworks break!
It’s been an interesting transit....GA was low country marshes, few boats, little civilization. SC changed going north and the environment evolved to cypress swamps, very different and enchanting. SC/NC line around Myrtle Beach becomes very populated and this week/weekend was crazy busy with boats and jet skis. Holiday week and heat! Easier navigation in the channels than the windy rivers though.
Our worst experience was Thunderstorms at anchor. My GPS indicated a movement of our boat at 35MPH and that we went 1.3 miles while at anchor that night.....a night to remember to say the least! We changed anchor to a bigger Rocna last year and have no regrets. That sucker just dug in as we whipped back and forth at low tide.
Now come the big waters of the NC sounds.....
TWINS is just about to pass both 5 years and 6000 miles on our Loop Journey.
What a long strange trip it’s been....
....so far
