The keys route is an excellent alternative to crossing the O.
There are lots of marina and anchorage options. See active captain.
The west side may be more of an issue depending on your speed. The shArk river anchorage is a common stopping point. The crab pots are also somewhat challenging.
On the east coast we went outside in good weather to avoid bridges and traffic in the ICW lauderdale area.
Boca Chita key and No Name harbor were great stops for us.
Let me know if you have specific questions. I think the main reason for crossing the Okochobee is to save time and distance, but the keys are definitely worthy of the detour.
