Subject: Around the world, Day 10, Fuel and range calculation

By Georgs Kolesnikovs

Aboard the Nordhavn 40 Nordhavn

Day 10: Dana Point to Honolulu

Fuel and range calculations

Here's how Jim Leishman works the numbers every day at 12 noon local time:

<<

Remaining fuel aboard            430 gallons (240 starboard, 190 port)

Fuel burn last 24 hours                      50 gallons

Distance made good last 24 hours    151 nautical miles

Speed made good last 24 hours    6.3 knots

Distance remaining to destination            970 nautical miles

Remaining range at current speed 6.2 knots    1,333 nautical miles

Must make 2.23 miles per gallon to achieve above.

Estimate 100 gallons remaining upon arrival at Honolulu

Estimate arrival Tuesday, November 20, at 12 noon

These numbers are reviewed and recalculated daily, sometimes more than once
a day. Noting the requirement of 2.23 mpg makes it easy to keep an eye on
the FloScan fuel measurement readout.

If we have around 100 gallons still aboard when we reach Honolulu, we'll
have adhered to the rule laid down by Robert Beebe in Voyaging Under Power,
that is, always keep 10 per cent of total tankage in reserve. Jim prefers to
use 20 per cent, but on this long passage, he may have to settle for the
lower number, especially if Walt Hack's latest forecast proves to be
accurate in terms of more contrary winds coming our way.

Note: As soon as we can, we'll resume posting reports at
http://www.trawlerworld.com, including the ones we missed, and adding photos
too. During the unexpected hiatus, daily reports will be directed to Trawler
World List via Alex Hirsekorn. If you have a question for the crew of
Nordhavn, e-mail mailto:alexh@olypen.com to have your question forwarded.

If you are not a member of Trawler World List, you can monitor reports from
on board Nordhavn at
http://www.samurai.com/lists/trawler-world-list/date.html#end. Watch for
messages that start with the words "Around the world" in the subject line.
