Hello all You Wind Bracers:
One indeed has to brace oneself in order to do some birding today &
yesterday. I stayed in my car most of the time. I sighted 6 HOODED
MERGANSERS right inside the Bowmanville Marina, close to the Restaurant & 2
MUTE SWANS as well as another 3 pairs in different areas of the marsh in
that area. 1 HOODED MERGANSER was doing his mating dance.
I sighted 2 RED BREASTED MERGANSERS in the same area just a bit further
north from them. And a little further north on Liberty before one gets to
the 401 I sighted 750 EUROPEAN STARLINGS. At one point they all gathered on
someone's front lawn. It looked like wall to wall carpeting with the many
glossy colors and yellow beaks which looked very unique.
Yesterday I sighted 2 TRUMPETER SWANS # 570 (Bev Kingden, can you send me
the story on him/her) & 648 in a corn field just north of Highway # 2 east
of Newcastle about 12 km. This afternoon I saw # 648 back in the Newcastle
Marina being chased away from the buns I was feeding the other 2 TRUMPETER
SWANS, Sid & Nancy, just Sid is tagged with # 646. I was offering them some
corn up out of the water but it was too windy for them I think. A local
fisherman shared with me that a flock of WHITE SWANS flew over head towards
the west yesterday, he estimated between 30-40.
The 32 LONG TAILED DUCKS were as pretty as ever in the Cobourg Harbour by
the pier yesterday.
I sighted 24 COMMON GOLDENEYE & 36 BUFFLEHEAD swimming and diving by the
Bowmanville Beach at the end of Liberty St. S. today.
The COMMON REDPOLLS, AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES, BLACK CAPPED CHICKADEES, DARK
EYED JUNCOS, WHITE BREASTED NUTHATCHES, RED BELLIED, HAIRY & DOWNY
WOODPECKERS, RED WINGED BLACK BIRDS, COMMON GRACKLES, MOURNING DOVES are
continuing the challenge of feeding in our yard.
I sighted several RED TAILED HAWKS with some braving the wind and others
perched firmly up in a tree.
Directions: Take Highway # 401, exit # 432 to Liberty exit and drive south
towards the lake. For Newcastle take Mill St. S. exit, # 440, and drive
south and all the way along the lake towards the Cobourg Harbour.
