Job Title: Education Coordinator

Job Summary:

As the oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization in Pierce
County, Tahoma Audubon Society provides a dynamic work environment where
volunteers and staff work hand-in-hand to connect people with nature. The
Education Coordinator position stands at the heart of the mission to educate
people of all ages about the wonders of the natural world and to develop
conservation-minded citizens.

Accountability:

  • Reports to Executive Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Delivery

  • Develop, coordinate and deliver environmental education curriculum and
    programs for diverse audiences, including pre-school and home school groups,
    students, families and adults.
  • Deliver presentations and programs at various sites to schools,
    community groups and outreach events.
  • Work with staff of Tacoma Nature Center in partnership to ensure an
    age-level progressive and complementary educational program.
  • Work with volunteers and community resources in development of youth
    and adult education programs.
  • Submit articles in a timely manner to Towhee newsletter to inform
    membership of education programs and volunteer opportunities.

Volunteer Management

  • Recruit, interview, assign, train and supervise volunteers as docents
    and project or event assistants.
  • Develop materials and tools to support volunteer recruitment and
    retention.

Administration

  • Support fundraising efforts of Executive Director and Board by
    assisting with grant proposals, record-keeping, compiling statistics and
    preparing reports to foundations.
  • Work with Executive Director to develop annual strategic plan and
    education budget in accordance with guidelines set by Board.
  • Help to maintain facility, grounds, displays and exhibits.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in natural science, education, or environmental
    studies. Teaching certification desirable. Knowledge of Pacific Northwest
    natural history preferred.
  • Experience in education curriculum and program design, delivery and
    evaluation.
  • Familiarity with state education standards preferred.
  • Teaching experience with children and adults.
  • Experience working with volunteers. Supervisory experience desirable.
  • Group presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Strong verbal, written and communication skills.
  • Computer skills and knowledge of MS Office applications.
  • Ability to organize and work in a multi-faceted environment.

Licenses and other requirements:

  • Valid driver's license required. National background check required.
  • Must be able to obtain a valid first aid/CPR certification within
    probation period.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends and off-site as needed.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Part-time, salaried position

  • Three month probationary period; annual performance review
