I've been a Nobeltec user since the first edition about 25 years ago,
upgrading with each new release. Until about three years ago when MaxSea
bought Nobeltec, that is, and began relabeling MaxSea software with the
Nobeltec brand. Because they now own Nobeltec, of course, they have every
right to do that, but the later releases are clearly not the old style
Nobeltec that I came to know and trust with this important part of the
cruising I do. I'd estimate that I've covered close to 50,000 miles
relying on Nobeltec as my primary navigation software.
Nobeltec's treatment of currents in its edition 10.7 (released in 2010) was
state of the art. I have not looked at every program out there, to be
sure, but as far as I have found nobody else does it as well as Nobeltec
did in that release. Nobeltec build 10.7 is the latest release of the
original Nobeltec software to have this excellent current "engine" and it's
the one I continue to use--that one of the main reasons why.
Currents can be displayed/predicted in two ways with Nobeltec 10.7 and
older Nobeltec software:
--"Manually" by using the built-in Tides & Currents stand-alone application
built into Nobeltec versions 7.0 and later. (It may be built into earlier
editions; I can't remember back that far!) In this manner, you pick the
current station you want predictions for, and the date, and a graphic
showing currents for that spot pops up--it shows times and current (in
knots) of slacks and maximum floods and maximum ebbs, with the graphic
showing everything in-between. Problem with using this for, say, a 50- or
100-mile passage is you have to know which current stations you'll pass
though and pull up each one manually--depending on your location and
intended trip that may mean dealing with 50 or more individual current
stations.
--The easier way to do it is to use Nobeltec's built-in ETA Calculator
which allows you to attach current data to amy route you have laid out and
compute transit time for the route based on any departure time (or times)
you plug in. This will also calculate the average speed you'll make good
for any given departure time you select. And it will also recommend the
best departure time (that it, the one that offers the fastest transit time)
based on the boat speed you enter and the earliest/latest departure you
enter. I use it for virtually every passage and I find that the
predictions, while not perfect, are uncannily accurate.
This is by far the most sophisticated treatment of currents in any
electronic navigation program I've seen to date, and it's one reason I
continue to use Nobeltec 10.7 and have refused to upgrade to the later
MaxSea-based "Nobeltec".
But Joe is absolutely correct: Nobeltec has notified users like him and me
that sometime in 2014, probably in the fall, Nobeltec will cease offering
support for Nobeltec 10.7. That doesn't mean the "legacy" (software speak
for "old") software will no longer work, just that users will not be able
to telephone or email Nobeltec and get support when they have a problem or
a question. Users will be able to continue to update the cartography
(charts) by using raster charts, but this edition of Nobeltec (and earlier
editions dating back to 7.0 and earlier) use expensive proprietary vector
charts--they will not display NOAA vector charts. With that in mind, I
recently updated the vector charts for my edition, knowing I won't be able
to do so again after 2014.
There are plenty of captains using Nobeltec 10.7 and older editions, and
doing so very happily. They tend to be people like me who are fans of the
original Nobeltec and simply didn't want to shift to MaxSea versions of
Nobeltec. They are also people who, for the most part, have been using
Nobeltec for many years and don't need much or any support.
Full disclosure: I owned a company that was the worldwide top-seller of
Nobeltec software between 1988 and 2000, when I sold the company. I have
not had any financial interest in the company or electronic navigation
software since that time.

I have had great success using the Nobletec's V10 integration of tides and
currents eta/best departure time calculator. Unfortunately, Time zero only
has limited integration...bummmer that this older version is soon to be not
supported.. I use this extensively after laying out my intended course
and then using the feature to determine eta (transit time) and best time to
depart within my window. I even use it when crossing multiple minor /major
inlets and have found it surprisingly accurate. I can not begin to do this
on my own. I have not found the equivalent app or software and would like
to know if an alternative software is available. Hopefully someone has
found one.
