ALBION, N.Y. — A 10-mile stretch of the Erie Canal in western New York
remains closed to boat traffic as crews repair an embankment that partially
collapsed earlier this week.
The state Canal Corp. says workers are stabilizing a breach in the south
wall of the waterway in the Orleans County village of Albion, 30 miles west
of Rochester. The agency has shut down the canal between Albion and Holley
as workers drain that stretch of water so they can repair the damage that
started Monday night.
Officials say a large sinkhole in a road near the canal caused the wall
breach. County officials say the hole measured 60 feet wide and 16 feet
deep. Crews used about 200 tons of rock to fill the sinkhole.
