Boxiness

Rod, I don't think you have seen a Manta 44 Powercat if you are going to group
it in the "boxiness" category with the PDQ and Endeavour.  The design gets
rave reviews from owners and observers on its asthetics all the time. I can
assure you the cost of the tooling reflected the amount of curves in this
design as compared to the less expensive flat panel look of some.  I have
noticed you seem to have a proclivity to take little shots at designs you
don't sell, you wouldn't happen to be the agent for the two designs you were
describing would you?

Pat, a bit testy, are we? Don't get your feathers up. There's them that
likes your stuff and them that don't. Rod was making a valid point in
general regarding styling trends, but specifically in reference to the PDQ.
Or so I thought.

Here is what Rod Gibbons of Cruising Cats USA, who does NOT sell does
not sell Endeavour, Manta or PDQ, wrote:

If I could have one wish regarding power cats in general, it would be that
designers move ON from the seemingly entrenched "boxiness" of so many
designs. (Endeavour, Manta, PDQ, etc.) They seem to be stuck in that same
design-mode once the hallmark of monohulls like the Tolleycraft and early
Bayliners....but such boxiness has now long been abandoned by the monohull
market, in exchagne for sleeker lines adn profiles. For power cats to be
more successful, I think they, too, need to "evolve" esthetically.

When I read that, I figured Rod had made an honest mistake in
including the Manta in the grouping as Manta is one manufacturer that
surely has evolved away from boxiness, adopting the sleeker line and
profile that Rod talks about.

In fact, when one considers new designs such as Motorcat, Stealth and
even NauticBlue 47, boxiness is not a word that comes to mind.

But so-called boxiness cannot be that terrible as in the U.S.,
Endeavour and PDQ sell more cruising power catamarans than all other
brands combined, and a new design that definitely is boxy, the TomCat
255, is coming on strong.

Well, I suppose someone could do all sorts of sleekifying on their powercat
design, and make it look just like some sort of "Euro-style" express
cruiser, but let's get real - the boat's we're discussing here are lucky to
cruise at 20 kts.  Makes me think of the old VW conversion kits where you
could strap a faux Porsche skin on a Beetle - looked like it was doing 140
standing still, but it was still just a Beetle underneath.

I'm guessing that most guys on this list fall closer to the trawler
aesthetics crowd than the "express cruiser" crowd.  Besides, if I was a
powercat builder getting $700K for a 40 ft boat, I wouldn't change a thing
about my designs.
