Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsWe did the Loop in 2000 in our single screw DeFever 41. We recorded 5556 statute miles which included The Rideau Canal. Our trip took 211 days. We spent 77 nights in marinas.
We put on 783 main engine hours and 340 genset hours. We used 1940 gallons of diesel and this cost, (are you ready for this?) $2377.00.
When we lived in San Francisco, the cruising grounds were Mexico and to a lesser extent Central America. Costs there are much lower than the US east coast. The age old question in those days was how much does it cost to go cruising. The answer was always, "all your have". Meaning of course that different folks spend differently. In those days it was possible for a sailing couple to cruise Mexican waters for a couple years on $1k per month. Then as now, food and drink or more accurately restaurants and bars can easily double or triple your costs.
But even in the expensive east coast US, it is possible to get by on a lot less without "camping". If one must be frugal, there are tricks. Avoid marinas, eat lunch out instead of dinner, plan fuel purchases carefully and reduce running rpm's a little. An onboard Washer/dryer pays for itself quickly.
The loop is a marvelous trip. It's worth it no matter how much one spends...Dick
