Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsThe proposed rate increases for the Canadian canals and parks don't
affect this year (2013). They would not go into effect until 2014.
It's still the best deal around for some great locations. When we spent
almost two months on the Canadian canals in 2011 we were on lock walls
about 60% of the time (the rest anchored out or twice in marinas) and
used their electric at $10/night (that was the rate in 2011) when we
were staying for more than a couple of nights - perhaps 25% of the
nights on walls.
No matter how you do it, your costs will vary depending on your cruising
habits. If you spend every night in a marina (or using electric at a
lock in Canada), your costs will be much more than if you let your
batteries take some of the load!

Bob,
The lockage fee increases are scheduled for 2014, the mooring fees sometime
in 2013...providing of course that they reach some sort of agreement on what
they will be.

Or alternately, instead of responding to the Canadian bureaucrats, simply
don’t go to Canada. Vote with your pocket book. Spend your money in the USA
where we still have a struggling economy on the brink of recession. Plenty
of great cruising ground in the USA.

Don’t know if any of you have been following the revision of the Canadian
Canal lock and mooring fees.
But they are about to approve a huge increase. Mooring $20/ft and lockage
$15/ft. That puts the one season fees for great loop boat in the approx
range of $2000..
If you are bothered by this.. I would urge that you send cards and letters
to Canada’s Park Service and members of parliament.
Best
Jim

Please provide some input : where to go in US, which has the charm, quality
of life and century old villages of the Rideau and Trent-Severn system ?
Certainly not the Mississippi. Tennessee River ? Hudson ?

I sorry but you've touched a nerve. I've cruised all those to include the
Western Rivers.
The Western Erie Canal is most like the Canadian Canals as both are parks.
The Western Erie is the historic portion of the Erie and has a town every
10-12 miles corresponding to the service limits of the mules. These offer
great charm and history. Also, they offer "pumps out" for free, most have
free power included with canal seasonal pass ($75 in 2011) as well as
Washrooms with "showers" and even some with free a laundry. In addition to
the towns on the Canal are those Cities in the Finger Lakes accessed from
the Canal e.g. Syracuse, Ithaca and Watkins Glen. Of course Rochester is 40
mins. off the canal down the Genesee River and there is Buffalo at the
canal's end.
I really wouldn't say which are better as both have merits as a cruising
venue...that said neither trumps the other. I've done both so can offer an
opinion from personal experience.
As to the Western Rivers, there is the Ohio River, It has great towns
steeped in history as well as Cities mosty with free docks! We found the
Ohio River to count up with our very best cruising experience. We even
cruised to the end of the Monogahela just past Farimont West Virginia which
is the highest point in North America a boat can travel to from sea, 867'.
The Hudson is also a river with an incredible great history. Please explore
all these before making jugement. You will be very pleased you did.

I apologize if I touched anybody's nerve by asking a question about nicest
rivers and canals to go in US. It was not my intention and my question was
real. Obviously, I didn't have the right words.
I'm very much interested in rivers and canals we don't often hear about. So
please continue to feed the list with good ideas and suggestions.

Jim and list,
With out a doubt, the Rideau Waterway, the Trent-Severn Waterway, the North Channel, the 30,000 Islands of the Georgian Bay, are among the most beautiful cruising waters in the United States.
In that part of North America, I would suggest a week or so on the U.S. side of the 1000 islands, next the Erie Canal has a lot to offer.
Then you would have to cruise South to the beautiful Chesapeake Bay and explore all the many rivers which empty into the Bay.

Steve and list,
Woops. I did mean that the Rideau, Trent-Severn, Georgian Bay and North Channel were in Canada and not in the States -- I meant to say that they were in North America (Canada is in the North American continent.
Sorry for the confusion.
