In the final 2018 Salish Sea Early Music //////Festival performance,
baroque lutenist Oleg TImofeyev from Iowa City, Iowa and Jeffrey Cohan,
on the one-keyed baroque flute, play reconstructions of music by Silvius
Leopold Weiss (1687-1750), the most prolific and highly esteemed
lutenist of the baroque who rivaled Johann Sebastian Bach in
improvisational skill and worked for more than three decades at the
court of the Elector of Saxony in Dresden alongside French flute
virtuoso Pierre-Gabriel Buffardin (1689-1768). Although he wrote much
music for obbligato, or fully written out, lute and flute, the flute
part has unfortunately been lost but has been reconstructed for this
performance. The program will also include music for obbligato lute and
flute by Ernst Gottlieb Baron (1696-1760) and Friedrich Wilhelm Rust
(1739-1796).

Musicologist, guitarist, and documentary film director and composer,
OlegTimofeyev was born in Moscow, Russia to a musical family that has
given the world several generations of professional musicians.  He holds
his M.A. in Early Music Performance from USC (1992).  In 1999, Timofeyev
defended his Ph.D. dissertation “The Golden Age of the Russian Guitar:
Repertoire, Performance Practice, and Social Function of the Russian
Seven-String Guitar, 1800-1850” at Duke University. Timofeyev plays
Renaissance and Baroque lute and Russian seven-string guitar, and has
recorded more than 20 CD albums featuring these instruments.
