While walking the southern section of the Tidal Marsh Trail which starts in North Haven behind the Target store, I heard the distinct old car horn, two note call of what in my Rolodex of bird calls sounded like Ring Necked Pheasant. (My ears, not Merlin’s.) I heard it call twice but in the dense ticket I never found a bird, nor could I record it. Least Bittern can sort of kind of maybe, make a similar call note, I think, maybe? For sure bittern occurs in the marsh, but I heard this bird in grassy thicket woods, not marsh. My memory heard pheasant.
Am I not thinking of something else? Ideas?

Hi Mark,
For those who aren’t aware, the state stocks RNPH at approximately 38
wildlife management and privately owned areas for hunting purposes.
“Residual” males have been found after hunting season closes for them -
personally I’ve seen them at the Lower Greenwoods (MDC New Hartford)
stocking site in the spring in New Hartford/Barkhamsted.

Please note that there are no longer self sustaining populations of ring-necked pheasant in Connecticut. The pheasant has been removed from checklists when doing surveys or Christmas/Summer Bird Counts as a viable species.

Anyone know why the pheasant populations are no longer self sustaining?
