Landfill's Recovery & Transfer Center earns 'Best Project' in the Northwest

Engineering News-Record (ENR) awarded Tacoma Solid Waste Management top regional honors as "Best Project" in the industrial/manufacturing category for its new Recovery & Transfer Center, a state-of-the-art building where Tacoma's garbage passes through before it's recovered for recycling or landfilled.

"It's great to see the efforts of the City of Tacoma and its project partners recognized for creation of an innovative Recovery & Transfer Center, which allowed the solid waste utility to implement new and more efficient materials handling processes," said Environmental Services Interim Director Mike Slevin.

Of the more than 500 civil engineering and construction project entries received nationwide, the Recovery & Transfer Center stood out among Northwest projects for its high marks in innovation, safety, teamwork, community contribution and design/construction excellence.

Tacoma, along with the other regional winners, will vie for top national honors in ENR's Best of the Best Projects competition in December.
