I would seriously consider having a camera in the rudder space to watch the steering gear. It would most likely have to have a light that could be turned on from outside. On the DD-462 this would be relatively easy to do and would allow examination without having to tear the bed apart.
For coastal cruising this might not be much of an issue, but for bluewater stuff, it would bring some peace of mind, especially during a big storm.
