Hey are you attending? Not a trawler boater but am a looper dreamer. I guess you could say we've done a half loop.

Hi  Georgs,

The
first Trawler Fest I attended was in Solomons, MD in 1997.  I recall the seminars being held at the Holiday Inn, with the boats being docked at Calvert Marina.  I also recall Mark Richter, of Winnie-the-Pooh, being at the engine seminars discussing his building of Winnie.  I believe that Bruce Kessler was present discussing cruising on the original Zopilote, a highlight of the presentations.

But most of all was the camaraderie of all who attended which was solidified with Friday nights Crab Feast!!!  Oh, my goodness, the bushels of crab just piled onto the tables all night long.  My lips were numb from the Old Bay seasoning :).

In 1998, my wife attended as well.  We stayed at the Holiday Inn and met a Canadian couple who had docked their 44 Gulfstar at that location, instead of Calvert.  We wound up driving them back and forth to the seminars all weekend.  My wife fell in love with the Gulfstar, and that set the tone for our purchase of a 44 Atlantic in 2001, which we lived aboard and cruised during summers in NY for 6 years.  Unfortunately, we've lost track of that couple, but did host them at our yacht club in NY on their way back to Canada.  They had cruised the Caribbean as far as Puerto Rico and the Turks and Caicos since meeting them at Trawler Fest.

At the '98 event we sat with Skipper Bob and his wife Elaine for the crab feast and the stories and jokes he told that night kept us all in tears.  A great time and memories.

Hope all is well with you.

Hi folks,

Well it's that time of year again ... southbound, wagons ho!

And the choice whether to take Virginia Cut (Route 1) or the Dismal Swamp Canal (Route 2) from Norfolk to Albermarle Sound is already fueling the Forum fires.

Diana and I are BIG fans of the Dismal Swamp Route and for those interested here's a PassageMaker Magazine article we wrote to back it up!

Ahoy, all hands!

Anyone still around who attended the first Trawler Fest back in 1996,
August 9-11 at Port Orchard in Puget Sound and October 11-13 at Solomons in
the Chesapeake?

I'm preparing an article on the founding of Trawler Fest for PassageMaker
Magazine and need help remembering how it was way back then. I'm especially
interested in the years 1996-2002.

Flashback: I started Trawler Fest in 1996, with the support of West
Marine, one year before launching Trawler World List (TWL) which continues
today as Trawlers & Trawlering List (T&T). Great Loop List was started
during a Great-Loop gathering at an early Trawler Fest at Solomons.

Here's how Trawler Fest was first announced on Sailing Forum at
CompuServe:

West Marine Trawler Fest is a special new event open to all makes of
motorboats and motorsailers and the people who cruise, voyage and
live aboard them, and the people who want to.

Trawler Fest is a rendezvous, an in-water boat show, seminars and
workshops, social activities, a
weekend of fun on the water, and a cruise in company the week
following for those on vacation.

We are thrilled to have Jim and Susy Sink, who recently completed a
circumnavigation of the world aboard Salvation II, a Nordhavn 46, as
our special guests of honor at Trawler Fest. The slide presentation
on their great adventure will doubtless be one of the highlights of
the weekend.

If you'd like more information via email, just let me know. If you
want an event brochure and registration form mailed to you, email
me your address. Indicate your preference for Puget Sound August
9-11 or Chesapeake October 11-13.
