Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsA former colleague of mine from the UK has requested my advice on a
Loop excursion. He will be in the US for three months next summer. His
son will lend him his Albin 27 and has agreed to trailer it to the
starting point and pick it up from the end point.
I seek the list's advice on the most interesting three month section
of the Loop. My personal preference would be to start in Chesapeake
Bay, cruise up the Jersey Shore to the Hudson, take the Erie Canal to
Oswego, and then the Canadian Canals to Georgian Bay. But since I live
in the area, I am certainly biased. It has been over 20 years since I
traveled other areas (except for the ICW from Florida) and many
changes may have taken place that I know nothing about.
The only criterion is that the trip be doable in three months in a
relaxed cruise and that the weather be better than a Welsh summer.

If he does the trip the way the Culottas are doing it, he can save a lot
of fuel by concentrating on a smaller section of the Loop and do less
actual traveling.
There are still some very high estimates of what fuel/oil prices will be
in the future and if this is the case, then the "Culotta Method" might
be in order.
From what I have read, the Canadian section seems to get the most raves.

Larry, you are absolutely right, this would cover the prettiest part of the loop.
That said, the best time to do the T-S, Georgian Bay, North Channel leg is in September because the mosquitoes and flies seem to disappear after Labor Day. (maybe they go back to school!)
In the six times I have cruised the North Channel, all in September, I have never encountered the bugs that others say plague them in the summer months.
The weather has always been acceptable, as well. That would be a good place to spend the third month of his cruise.
BTW, I have now moved to Weehawken, NJ and have my boat at the Haverstraw Marina. Thanks again for your good advice on choice of marinas and the Hudson river.
