Colleagues,
I have reduced my practice to municipal law and probate related matters.

I have many closed criminal, divorce and civil litigation files, which I would like to shred.  Should I keep them indefinitely instead?

Respectfully,
Steven Holloway

I generally keep private litigation files for 5 years and send a closing letter to clients advising them that records will only be retained for that period.  However, I typically have pleadings scanned in my electronic files and those are kept indefinitely.  I do not criminal or divorce work, so have not policy for those types of cases.
