Visitors:
A big thanks to Donny and Noel for helping us with the observation today.
It was nice to see friends, the Balkwill Family and Martin and Cathy
Parker. Thanks to all the other visitors for their interest in the Hawk
Watch.
Weather:
Overcast all day with temperature in the high teens. It rained off and on
in the first half of the morning. The wind was moderate from the south
during the rainy period but reduced to light for the rest of the day.
Visibility was generally good.
Raptor Observations:
The Turkey Vultures are starting to migrate with 119 passing by, mostly in
the afternoon. The second highest number was Sharp-shinned Hawks at 103.
Low numbers for the remainder; Cooper's Hawk (1), Broad - winged Hawk (2)(a
bit of a change from yesterday!), Northern Harrier (4), American Kestrel
(2) and Merlin (3)
Non-raptor Observations:
The Blue Jays are still passing the Tower in good numbers (39,500). There
were 7 species of Warbler, a bit down from yesterday, but new for the fall
list were Blue-headed Vireo and White-throated Sparrow. It was also good to
see a further increase in Rusty Blackbird numbers (53). Late in the day the
insects must have been flying as over 200 Tree Swallow were seen hawking
over the marsh. A smart looking hatch year male Rose-breasted Grosbeak
appeared again today; it is interesting to watch its plumage change over
the last two weeks or so.
The list is at https://ebird.org/checklist/S119361240
Predictions:
Although the wind is forecast to be moderate WNW most of the day tomorrow,
there is the possibility of rain throughout the day. This may suppress
raptor migration.
