Rich's post about upgrading from a #45 CQR to a #72 Rocna started me thinking. (Yeah, I know)
How many times on this list, when the topic turns to anchors, has a member related a story of upgrading his anchor type. Inevitably, the member not only changes anchor types but also goes up in size or two. Predictably, the member is happy with the new anchor. I don't recall hearing about anyone who changed anchors but kept the same size, for example going from a #44 Bruce to a #44 Rocna. So my question is this...does satisfaction come from the different style of anchor or from the increase in size? Tell the truth gals, does size really matter?

Speaking for myself, I went from a 36lb CQR to a 72lb Rocna on my 37,000lb 39' Krogen.
I am confident in my case that size has an impact on my satisfaction. However, before I decided to acquire a Rocna, I was on a similar vessel that was using a 36 lb Rocna and it was this experience that helped me decide on a Rocna.
I anchor primarily in the mud of the Chesapeake. With the CQR, I would have to pick my spot and drop the CQR some distance from the eventual planned location of the anchor. During the process of setting the hook, I could plan on dragging the anchor some distance before a full set. In crowded anchorages, this meant I needed more space than was sometimes comfortable.
With the 36lb Rocna I watched in envy as the captain dropped the hook where the wanted it to be and it simply dug in and stuck, right there. No additional planning or guessing, just down and done.
At that point, I began asking other KK owners about their Rocna experiences and found zero negative comments. Only one captain had noted a reset and this was in 20kt+ winds at a tide change. He estimated a full positive reset in about 30'.
Since I often anchor and raft with other vessels and I had room for a bigger anchor, I went with a 72lb hook.
I can say that my 72lb Rocna simply stays where I drop it and, in 5 years, I have only had to make a second pass one time.

Randy,
I have an 88 kg Rocna on my 44 GWT trawler.
There is one anchorage in Fethiye’s (Turkey) where the bottom is thick, oozing mud.
My Rocna dragged 50 meters over 4 days, and before being stored, required over 45 minutes to clean.
Have yet to anchor there again.
Otherwise, my experience is like yours. I have held in force 9 winds behind a sea wall that stopped the surge but not the wind, in 9 meters of water, 80 meters of 12mm chain out, and the anchorage was crowded with some 50 boats.

In a word, YES!
Seaweed at 23' and 7000 pounds (weight on scale at travel lift) had a 25
pound plow. I dragged. Once.
Replacement: a 33 pound Rocna and if I thought I could manually haul in a
45 pound Rocna (or Manson Supreme) along with the chain, I'd have opted for
that size.
Yes, Seaweed has a Lewmar V700 but if the windlass quits, I want to be able
to raise the anchor. What I've discovered is that by day three the Lewmar
won't retrieve the anchor from a sand bottom. I must cleat her off on the
Samson post and power out with the engine.
When I anchor, I'm set! The "trouble" with that is that as I approach the
time to go to a dock for my new engine, I'm not certain I'll be able to
haul in the anchor -- I may attach a fender to help lift or possibly wimp
out and ask for help. I have a feeling this Rocna is half way to China by
now.
