Alan,

My information is a few years old now, but because of the geometry of the place, I think still applies.

With respect to the Ohio River anchorage at Mile 966, the former advice (Skipper Bob, if I recall correctly; maybe Fred Myers) was to use the area by the Federal Mooring Cells on the North (West) side of the river (Town of Olmstead).  When we arrived, the lockmaster told us they were expecting a large crane barge during the night, and would we please use the area on the Kentucky shore on the South (East) bank?  He assured us we'd have plenty of water and be well off the channel.  Of course, we complied.  It was an excellent anchorage.  It was quiet, well off the barge channel, had good holding and a gradually sloping bottom.  That night there were four of us anchored there, and there was room for several moor boats.  Because of the slope of the bottom, even in low water, one can approach until happy with the water depth and drop the hook.  On the CoE chart, the shore feature where we anchored is called "Turners Landing."  It is at mile 966, but on the Kentucky shore.  This would still be a good anchorage unless they've moved the channel.

Hope this is useful.

Just looked in Active Captain at Turners Landing at MM 966 on the Ohio
River. Two reviewers have written that this anchorage is no longer usable
because the channel has been shifted over towards it.

An alternate channel has been created in the vicinity of mile 962.6 and
continuing down river past the Olmstead Lock construction. This alternate
channel favors the KY side so anchoring is not longer advisable.

Fern (from Hoppies Marina) is now recommending anchoring up on the ILLINOIS
Side, across from the Turners Landing anchorage, tucked up behind the
downstream side of the Olmsted Lock construction. She said there is a deep
hole there.....she guessed maybe 20ft deep.
