Hi All,
I bought a 5# bag of Citric Acid to use instead of Barnacle Buster to
descale my AC system not knowing if I would find it in the Caribbean or
what the cost would be. The AC tech who is helping me suggested 2 Gallons
of BB. Google says Phosphoric Acid (the active ingredient in BB) is the
same as Citric Acid but usually cheaper. BB's SDS sheet says <10%
Phosphoric Acid (I assume that's by volume).
How much Citric Acid should I use per how much water to introduce into my
system? All guesses appreciated. Thanks.

Jim,
I use food grade citric acid. I pour 500 grams into my sea water strainer and close the inlet valve. Then using a hodpoge arrangement of water hoses and the saltwater pump, I circulate until I can no longer see and of the citric acid in the strainer. Then I wait about ½ hour. Then open the sea water inlet valve and wait an hours. The mixture tends to clean both side of the valve without any additional action. Then I operate the AC FW pump for 3 minutes and stop. Wait 1 hour or even overnight and pump sea water thru everything. As I am doing this usually for winter layup, I then back fill fresh water. If in spring, I may not backfill.
All this took longer to write than do, once my two circulation hoses are attached.
