Hi Georgs,
We arrived in Trinidad on Monday, 8 days from our last Brazil stop which was
Fortaleza. This passage really began in Cape Town where I had spent 8 weeks
having the boat worked on & enjoying life very much at the V & A Waterfront
Marina. I got together a new crew and we departed Cape Town on the 11th of
March in the midst of a dense fog, the first I have experienced for many
years.
Walvis Bay, Namibia was our destination and we arrived there on the 15th
after a good passage up the West Coast of South Africa. I took the
opportunity to top off the fuel tanks even though we'd only run 4 days
because fuel was easy to get duty-free & we wouldn't be taking on fuel
again until Venezuela. Next stop was St. Helena Island & then on to Fernando
de Noronho Island where the local officials charged us US$145.00 a night to
anchor in what is a very rolly anchorage. We stayed 3 nights there & went on
to Fortaleza, Brazil where everyone seemed to have their hands out for
mordida. The price of diesel there was equal to $4.60 a gallon so I chose to
not take any and now we are close to the place where fuel is very
affordable---Venezuela.
I'm going to lift out the boat at Peak's where she was 4 years ago and do
some 'plane flying to the States and Malaysia as a break from the cruising
routine. Chartwell averaged 7.8 knots for the passages from Cape Town, about
the same as when we came across from Malaysia in November-December of last
year. The Cummins 855M2 engine ran perfectly all the way and we burned 6
gallons an hour at 1200 rpm including one of the 21 KW generators and the
12kw hydraulic "cruising generator". Altogether, this was a better passage
than the last one 5 years ago because we went at the right time and had
better weather. We did lose one of the flopper-stoppers-------my fault
because I could see that the wire was fraying------last time we lost 2. Many
times I wished that we had actuated fins as they would do a better job of
stabilizing this boat than the paravanes. I will replace the towing wires
here and anything else that appears suspect.
Regards,
Larry Briggs

Paul Allen, formerly the other founder of Microsoft. He long ago withdrew
from active participation. He is a shy guy, but he has something going on?
He owns three vessels. One is only 300 feet and the third is smaller. Just
think of the personnel management issues!
I love her blue hull and Octopus is really well thought out. I'd love to
know what each of those domes is for. I see two conventional radars
forward,
and there's probably two facing aft. Maintenance, overhauls, and repairs.
There's a picture of her taking on fuel at a stone quay and there is a
shore
based crane holding the hose high enough to reach the deck fitting! Of
course, she has to carry jet fuel and gasoline as well.
I wonder what her anti-piracy procedures are? Her building costs was over
$200 million. Built by Lurresen in Germany as are many of the really big
ones.
Just think what you won't have to worry about! Of course, your Newfies
would
have tons of play room and an exercise pool.

Ron, I know somewhere that he has a full SEAL team that he employed
as personal security on his largest boat. I would say that is very
good Anti-Piracy protection..

Yes, but then he had to install a special, high-pressure tank for beer.
Just
seeing a squad out on the aft deck exercising should scare anyone off.
While
waiting for a truck, I watched an entire San Diego team doing PT. I lost
count of the sit-ups past 150. Of course, they also have to practice with
weapons, but Octopus probably has an indoor range!
