Wow The interesting part was that the tug alongside didn't appear to be
doing anything to help prevent the damage. His bow line was slack the whole
time and it didn't look like he was using any power.

Well, all that damage could have been avoided if the boats in the marina
had had their fenders out. It just goes to show, you cannot be too careful!
That tug sure did a great job.

What amazes me is that the ship was allowed to sail away. Those poor
recreational boats may never hear from that merchant man again. My ancestors
came from that area of Norway. If it had been me, I would have had the local
authorities put armed guards on the bridge of that ship and not allowed it
to move unless and until arrangements for payment for damages was
forthcoming.

I would have to say that the tugs had a lot to do with the control of the bigger ship. Someone was not doing their job as "eyes" for the captain.

From the lectures I attended in Annapolis I can assure you of the obvious

  • they can't see anything close in from the bridge. In NYC and Baltimore there is a docking master/captain who coordinates the tug support - with VHF and horn signals. You can see that someone was increasing the shaft revolutions and it finally took hold and started the ship's going ahead. But the damn tug wasn't doing anything. Maybe the tug was a casualty and the reason for her going out of control?
