I would not translate the effects of a large cat or monohull to that of a
recreational size vessel. I believe that the Dashews looked at ultimate
stability--and that Wind Horse has positative righting momentum until 140
degrees of heel. There it dips negative for a brief time, and then positative
again. I grant I have been told that there are no capsizes of power cats
reported. However you have to also understand what the Dashews do. Their
last sailing trip on Beowolfe was sailing the edges of hurricanes to get the
max wind, comming form Marquesis to San Diego in 12 days--close to 300 miles a
day under sail! They wanted a boat which would survive a rollover.
My understanding is that once a cat is upside down--it will stay that way,
until another event brings it back up. That should not bother most of us,
since we would not venture into those conditions--but it seems to concern the
Dashews. I first met Steve on the Podium of the Ensendeda race--we were both
getting trophies. He was telling me that he wanted to do the Transpac in his
sailing cat--planed on 4 to 5 days--velcro the sleeping bags to the trampolene
and sandwiches plus for the meals. It never happened--but that is his
energy.
I believe that Steve felt that a power cat could capsize and rejected the
notion for this reason. see: http://www.setsail.com/dashew/dashew215.html,
I have not been in a cat in a heavy sea way--but I have noticed that in some
cats in beam seas the motion can be quite quick and uncomfortable. Some of
the high speed smaller cats (such as 26 footers) even describe control
problems under these circumstances--I know it is hull design...but these are
the boats available. One of the popular production boats noted that the motion
was uncomfortable in a beam seas in the caribbean and the skipper and his wife
moved to the lower station because of this. (I cannot find the reference
currently). Please don't get me wrong--my next boat will be a cat, but I
don't think that they are perfect and try to be aware of any potential
issues.
