Today, March 14, 2004 we transited Lockwood's Folly on the ICW at 10:30 am.
I estimate tide at that time was 1.76 feet above MLW.  At the shallowest
point we saw 5 3/4 to 6 feet which verifies 4 feet at MLW.  A sailboat in
front of us drawing 5 1/2 feet briefly ran aground, but was able to get off
and then follow us thru.

I just returned from running the ICW northbound between Charleston and the
Neuse River aboard "Katahdin", a 42' Seaton design drawing approximately 5-1/2',
owned by lister Lee Robinson.  We passed thru Lockwood's Folly a bit before
high water last Monday and never saw less than 4' under the keel, which would
equate to about 5-1/2 to 6' at low water.  Local folks and USCG confirmed
similar depths and commercial tows are passing unimpeded.

The shallowest water that we saw in the ICW was about 8-10 miles south of
Bogue Inlet where we briefly touched on one or two occasions while in the center
of the channel.  This was also the shallowest section when I came south in
December, 2003 and at that time I witnessed a southbound tug/barge drawing 8'
aground and blocking the channel--the tow ultimately turned around and ran back
to Moorehead to run offshore for Cape Fear.
