Awhile ago I asked about an electric winch to use on a dinghy davit
to hoist my dinghy up on top of the deck over the cockpit.. I was
about to buy a Powerwinch DAVIT MASTER ELECTRIC WINCH - Model #
P77801. The cheapest price I found on www.froogle.com was $173. But
last Sunday when we were shopping at CostCo there was a Champion
Power Equipment 2000 Winch for $49! A bargain I couldn't pass up.
The 2000 Winch is rated at 2,000 lbs. but that is only for the first
layer of cable on the reel. The lowest rating is 940 lbs. on the 6th
layer. For pulls over 1,000 lbs. use of the included snatch block
and pulley to double the line is recommended.
Here are the specs:
Gear reduction: 153:1
Permanent magnet 0.7 HP 12 vdc motor
49' of 5/32" cable
Weighs 16 lbs
Wired remote which connected to two external terminals on the end
of the motor.
Standard two bolt winch bolt pattern
Free wheel clutch
25 A, 9.2 ft./min. @ 500 lbs.
40 A, 7.5 ft./min. @ 1,000 lbs.
60 A, 5.9 ft./min. @ 1,500 lbs.
90 A, 3.3 ft./min. @ 2,000 lbs.
Rated for intermittent use, no more than one minute under full
load followed by two minute cool down.
This winch isn't intended for marine usage. The instructions say to
disconnect the remote control when not in use. I will probably also
remove the winch for the winter.
This is a winch intended only for a horizontal pull, not a hoist
which can lift vertically. But of course that is what I intend to
do. The saving grace here is that I estimated my dinghy and motor
weigh about 400 lbs. and nobody is underneath it unless they are
swimming. Using a 40 A circuit breaker may serve as a safety limit.
Now I am looking for a two terminal 12 vdc weatherproof jack and plug
rated at 40--90 A.

Just adhere to the time limits! Don't ask. I got a lot of service from the
one I purchased from Northern Tool. At $49, consider it a throwaway - buy
two.

Try this trolling motor plug and socket. Three wires, but you need
only use two:

This is the best stuff to use for downriggers as well.
