[Younglawyers] Thanksgiving Weekend

I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend with friends and family.  I wanted to share with you a story that happened shortly before Thanksgiving.  It is not heart-warming....but a story on greed.

My husband's Grandfather R got pneumonia and was admitted to the hospital.  While he is in the hospital, Aunt S stays at her father's (Grandpa R's) house.  Until recently, Aunt S was estranged from her father and is somewhat poor and bitter.

It was looking bad for poor Grandpa R, but at 85, not that unexpected.  While Grandpa R was in hospital, my husband tells his Aunt S, that he wants to go over to Grandpa R's house and unload the loaded handguns in the closet.  Aunt S says in a huff, "don't worry about it!"

Fast forward a couple of days -Grandpa R passes away.  The very next day, my husband goes over to Grandpa R's house to take out the trash.  His Aunt S is there and acting very weird.  Things are everywhere and when he goes to the bedroom, he sees the handguns out, thinks that it is odd and he unloads the guns for safety.

We later found out....before my husband got there Aunt S and Aunt's daughter were busy unloading the house of all of the valuables.  Aunt S's daughter (who is at least 35 and should know better) was in Grandfather's bedroom, took down one of the guns and decided to see how the revolver works (which took TWO pulls of the trigger).  She ended up shooting the bed.  Scared of how my husband would react, the daughter hightailed it out of there.  Luckily, no one was hurt and we found out what they were unloading the house.

So the moral of the story is #1 don't store loaded guns; #2 unload all guns that you know are loaded; #3 don't touch guns unless you know what you are doing; #4 people can be very greedy.

And yes, I live in the Wild West.

Wow!  That's crazy.  I don't know how such greed overcomes people.  My
grandfather and I spent many hours listening to old records on a wind-up
record player.  When he knew he was dying, he made sure that everyone
knew that I was to get the record player and records in remembrance of
him.    Wouldn't you know it, the day after he passed away, my aunts
started asking "where's the record player?" and made sure that it didn't
come to me.  I didn't put up a fight but I was embarrassed for them.  I
have my memories with my grandpa which is worth more than family strife.
Grandpa passed away 13 years ago and, to this day, I don't think anyone
has listened to the old records or wound up the record player, but they
had to have it to make sure I didn't get it.

Sorry to hear of the loss in your family.

Tamara -
It amazes me how folks like to hurt others.  Greed is terrible.  Both of my parents are very ill right now and I can see the not-too-distant future of dealing with their estate.  I hope that my brother and I can work through it without it becoming a wedge in our relationship.

On a funny note, I believe my husband is now the owner of the revolver.
