I agree with Ralph. With more systems going paperless now is a good time for an across the board upgrade. Tying your radar and gps systems together is good navigational sense and something I do on my commercial tankers and cargo ships to reduce the chances of human error. A small boat with a crew of one or two can't afford the risk.

I generally like broadband radar and seriously considered it in 2010. But rather than focus on radar only, consider your entire electronics suite. Perhaps this is a good time to upgrade or all. I ended up with a new Furuno NavNet 3D system. Furuno has a long reputation as one of the best radar makers and is preferred by commercial users.

</div>Long story short, the heavy snow load this past winter basically ruined the radome of my Furuno radar. It appears that insurance is going to cover the loss (minus the deductible).
My question is this. Should I replace the old radar system with a conventional Furuno radar OR go to a Lowrance/Simrad 4G broadband radar?
I am aware of the basic properties of broadband radar. What is the wisdom and experience of the list regarding conventional versus broadband radar?
