Selling through a broker

After 10 years we will be selling in the next few months. Have never sold
one. We think we may be moving it to SW Florida where the broker is.
(Haven't contacted them yet). The boat is currently in Demopolis, AL. There
has been much discussion about brokers and we thought we might get some
basics:

  • would we be better served having the boat located in SW Florida, in
general, then Demopolis? How about Pensacola?

  • will the broker be more effective is the boat is near them?

  • What is the normal time frame for a contract? 1 year? 6 months? (We
realize these things can be negotiated)

  • Does the broker absorb any costs of prep for the sale?

Any other advice from folks who have used brokers would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Good morning Chas

No doubt you will hear many horror stories regarding Brokers.  I have worked with countless brokers from all over the country in my 24+ years of surveying and I can tell you, there is no "one size fits all " approach.
I have also purchased and sold several vessels utilizing brokers going back to the early 1990's.  There are so many aspects to consider, much more than I can list here.  Please feel free to contact me direct so that I may hopefully provide with you some insight from "both sides of the fence" so to speak.

After a year of listing with 2 different brokers with very little action, we listed it with Curtis Stokes and in 10 days had 3 showings and 2 real offers. We took the higher offer and had survey and settlement in 14 days. It was flawless.
