The attached map shows the overall Canadian and US canal system in the
northeast. The French River from Georgian Bay towards Ottawa is not
navigable except by canoes and kayaks in the western end from Lake
Nippising. But you do have choices of alternative routes from Harbor
Springs to Montreal.
- Trent Severn to Lake Ontario, then St Lawrence River to Montreal with
various locks
2 Trent Severn Canal to Lake Ontario, Rideau Canal from Lake Ontario to
Ottawa and then to Montreal
- Lake Michigan-Lake Huron-Lake Erie to Welland Canal to Lake Ontario or
- Lake Michigan-Lake Huron-Lake Erie to Erie Canal to Oswego Section of
Erie Canal to Lake Ontario
- Lake Michigan-Lake Huron-Lake Erie to Erie Canal to Albany, then north
thru Lake Champlain to the St. Lawrence and upstream to Montreal
- The long route to New York, around to the mouth of the St. Lawrence, and
upstream all the way to Quebec and Montreal.

Whichever route, take time to enjoy each day. High or low water in the
Trent Severn and/or Erie Canal systems, or the other locks may delay your

Looking for looper knowledge on getting from Harbor Springs Michigan to
Montreal Canada. Is there passage on French River thru Ottawa? Or is it
safer shorter better to go way of Port Severn to Toronto via Trent Severn
Canal?
This passage would begin June 1 2015.
