Please join us for a very special UWT Environmental Seminar MONDAY!

"Political Science:  How Science is Used (and Misused) in Washington, DC "
Brian Cohen, Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee Staff Director and
Senior Policy Adviser; Democratic Staff, Committee on Energy and Commerce

Monday, October 20, 2014
SCI 309, 12:25-1:25pm
by Skype from Washington, DC

Feel free to bring your lunch!  The UWT Environmental Seminars are open to
the public.

Brian Cohen graduated from Syracuse University (B.S., Chemistry) in 1990
and MIT (M.S., Civil and Environmental Engineering) in 1993.  After
realizing that a career in science was not for him (due to his propensity
for breaking glassware and lab equipment), he switched gears and from 1993
through 1998 worked at the Environmental Working Group, a DC-based
environmental advocacy group working on clean air and clean water issues.
He has worked for the U.S. House of Representatives since 1998, working
for the House Oversight Committee and the House Energy and Commerce
Committee. Presently he is the Democratic Staff Director for the Energy
and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. In his 20 year
career in DC, he has worked on a legislation ranging from the 1996 Safe
Drinking Water Act to the 2010 Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare). He has
led Congressional investigations of the Affordable Care Act, the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act, food and drug safety, tobacco sales and
advertising, the defective General Motors Chevrolet Cobalts the BP
Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Medicare drug pricing, the collapse of Lehman
Brothers and the 2008 financial crisis, inadequate treatment of injured
veterans at the Walter Reed Hospital, and - a personal favorite - steroid
abuse in Major League Baseball.

Cheers,
Jim
