GEESE were the highlights of reports received March 21
through March 28 from the Niagara Frontier Region.
March 21, a rare ROSS'S GOOSE among over 1500 SNOW GEESE on
Park Road, east of the Waterport Pond, in the Orleans County
Town of Carlton.
GR. WHITE-FR. GEESE at four locations this week - four at
Ring-necked Marsh and one at Kumpf Marsh in the Iroquois
Refuge, and single GR. WHITE-FR. GEESE also at Waterport
Pond, and in the Town on Yates on Route 18 west of Murdoch
Road.
CACKLING GEESE continue their increase in the region. A
flock of 30 on Johnson Creek Road in the Niagara County Town
of Hartland, 10 on Waterport Pond, and lesser numbers also
in the Iroquois Refuge at Cayuga Pool and Ring-neck Marsh,
and the Lake Ontario Plains.
Abundant duck species among peak numbers of CANADA GEESE in
the Lake Ontario Plains, Iroquois Refuge and surrounding
areas. 126 TUNDRA SWANS in the Tonawanda Wildlife Management
Area. Six TUNDRA SWANS remain from the large winter flocks
on the Niagara River off Grand Island. The ponds at the
Batavia Waste Water Plant are thawing, bringing LESSER SCAUP
and RUDDY DUCKS.
March 23, at Dunkirk Harbor, highlights were 7 SURF SCOTERS
including a breeding plumage male, plus 6 BL.-CR. NIGHT-
HERONS, 139 D.-CREST. CORMORANTS, numbers of ICELAND GULLS,
L. BLACK-B. GULLS and GLAUCOUS GULLS, 2 BALD EAGLES and a
MERLIN.
SHORT-EARED OWLS still on Posson Road in Shelby - an
estimated 9 owls on March 24, and another 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS
on Chaddock Road in the Town of Bethany.
March 25, a FOX SPARROW in Bethany. Other passerines -
COMMON RAVEN at Mid-River Marina in Tonawanda. Increasing
TREE SWALLOWS in the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area. A
likely wintering YELLOW-R. WARBLER at Waterport Pond, and in
a Williamsville yard, 3 COMMON GRACKLES, each with distinct
white plumage patches.
