Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsA couple of young ladies did the loop in 2007 or 2008 in a 18 foot boat
that was specially fitted for the loop. You need to read their blog. We meet
them in Little Current. They started in St. Louis. Big thing was they
drafted larger boats in bad weather and big seas. You need road maps besides
charts so as to identify gas stations where you can walk to get fuel. It has
been done on a jet ski and we seen canoes doing it.
As long as you outfit and provision for the type of boat you are using and
plan your stops, I guess any size boat works.

Like camping out. As there are many stretches without marinas and/or
motels. Paddling I assume? You will need to have a range to span the gas stop
less stretches e.g. Hoppies to GTB.

My friend and I (both retired and previous Trawler owners) are
considering
doing the Great Loop in very small boats (under 12 ft). Is this crazy to
even think about? or is it doable given the types of water that we will
have during such a trip. We are somewhat experienced boaters but no
experience with the Great Loop. We obviously would not be living on the
boats, but just using them to get from point A to B to C, etc. Any advice
appreciated.
