Butoh is an avant-garde dance/theater genre. It developed in 1960s Japan created by collaborations between Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno. It became a focus in the post-modern movement in Japan. A movement that was a rebellion against western dance, Kabuki, Noh, and with a focus on improvised structure. Butoh has since become an international dance practice with classes and performances worldwide.
