Why hello, Mr. STB. Nice to make your (spatial) acquaintance.
Just be thankful that your words don't begin with STD :-)
I just learned about this whole thing a few hours ago, and
am not convinced. As I understand it, the words are supposed
to all be "dictionary words", which begs the question "How can
a compact algorithm know how to confine itself to dictionary
words without storing a list of all such words?". Anyway, it seems
to me that a true emergency system needs to be able to detect
an emergency condition and call for help without assistance from
a conscious, coherent, victim. This implies machine-to-machine
communications, which is both possible and practical, and no funny
word lookups are necessary- just transmit raw GPS coordinates
and be done with it.
Meanwhile, don't be such a stranger. This group holds regular
Zoom meetings, and they are fun.

I tend to prefer UTM (or MGRS...different view of the same data). But try
remembering a lat/lon to 6 digits precision, or an equivalent UTM...not
something I like to do with frequency.

That said, it's got a lot of problems, mostly the project used is
"web mercator" so it can have accuracy problems in areas of extreme
elevation change. The biggest issue is that the algorithm used to
calculate
is proprietary so you need to use their service for lookups. People
have published functionally equivalent algorithms and been hit with
DMCA takedown notices.

Just keep in mind this is the MVUS list not LWTG list. To be on this list
you need to be a paid up member of MVUS.
This list is supposed to be VHF and up discussions. Where LWTG anything
goes. There are a number of people who are common to both lists, which
causes confusion once in a while as to which list one is posting to.
