Hi,
We visited Great Kills a week ago on our way back to Maine. Our take is while GK is less robust than before the storm, it looks a heck of a lot better than immediately after Sandy. We were warmly welcomed at the Great Kills Yacht Club and had a great dinner at Cole's restaurant down the street. The floating docks by the public boat launch are in, so shore access from anchored boats is possible. The entrance to the harbor is a little tricky in that you have to pass on the wrong side of a couple of green marks to find water, but the bottom is nice and soft. So Great Kills is not impossible, just a little different.

We went into Great Kills on May 30th our way north.
Here's my take on the current state of affairs at Great Kills (one of
our favorite stops when heading north or south along the east coast:
Great kills is a shadow of its former (pre-Sandy) self. Only a few small
boats are on moorings because the moorings haven't been checked and
repositioned, the RCYC docks are completely destroyed with no evidence
of rebuilding, the other yacht clubs seem to be operating at their docks
only, and the park docks (the far right side of the harbor) and building
are gone. Boats are piled up on the shore, both to the left and far
right of the entrance channel after entering the harbor. Not a pretty
picture.
It is apparent that a lot of work has been done to clean up Sandy's
aftermath, but a lot remains to be accomplished before Great Kills is
anywhere close to it's pre-Sandy vibrancy.
