Hi . I was wondering if anyone would care to comment on the use of
outboards on powercats. I am thinking of replacing my Isuzu/ Jacuzzi
jet units with something more efficient, not to mention quieter with
less vibration. The cat is of Aussie heritage 28' x 10'6" , and about
10000lbs of narrow hulled alloy. Apart from the cost of a pair of
mid-sized 4-strokes there is also new mounting brackets ( outboard
wells ?) to be fabricated for the transom of each hull, making this
an exspensive venture.

Money issues aside , are there any safety/seaworthiness or other
reasons to avoid outboards on an offshore craft ?

Would also appreciate an educated guess as to the required hp to
achieve a cruise of 20kts and top of 35kts? Have access to a pair of
cheap Suzuki 140's , so am curious if they are up to the job.

Appreciate the Forum
TIA , tinsnips

hi john  you are my kind of guy.#1 u are lucky that starting w/ a aluminum
hull and 2 cheap 140 suzuki's your $$$$$ should be somewhat reasonable and
if the 140's don't perform u could still upgrade if necessary.I dont blame
u for wanting to get rid of the jets.My only concern would be the
condition/ age of these engines.I will follow this with great interest
because i too am in the process of doing a repower of a trailerable
expandable 27'x14' cat.I am throwing away the stick, adding a  larger engine
mount for a single 90hp 4 stroke.The specs i want are 18 k cruise ,25+ k
top & at least 5+ mpg.Total loaded weight will be 3500#  w/ 10 inch draft
