Running installer

Hello.

I have installed Ubuntu 13.10 server on a PC but otherwise have no Linux/Ubuntu experience at all.

When the installation was complete and the PC rebooted, I attempted to use the Automated installer for CollectionSpace 4.1 per the documentation at http://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/DOC/Automated+installer+for+CollectionSpace+4.1

I downloaded the installer script using:

curl --remote-name --location https://raw.github.com/cspace-puppet/cspace_puppet_bootstrap/master/scripts/bootstrap-cspace-modules.sh

Made it executable and ran it in automated mode:

sudo ./bootstrap-cspace-modules.sh -y

In short order it reported...

Checking for existence of executable file 'puppet' ...
Could not find executable file 'puppet'

And the installation stopped.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Bill

Hi Bill,

Sorry to hear you were having problems with the installer.

I'd be happy to help but I'll need a bit more information. Can you provide me a bit more detail about "I have installed Ubuntu 13.10 server on a PC ".

Is that installed within something like VirtualBox or VMware, or do you have a PC where it is the only operating system running?

Once I a better sense of that, I'll be able to help troubleshoot why the installer failed.

Thanks
Chad

Hi Bill,

First, thanks for your interest in CollectionSpace!

Next, thanks as well for this problem report! I've talked this over with
Chad Nelson, after he wrote you, and he told me that you have Ubuntu 13.10
running on a PC.

It would be helpful to understand what you're working to accomplish. Are
you:

  • Trying to get a sense of what CollectionSpace can offer?

If so, the interactive (fully functioning) demo at
http://demo.collectionspace.org and the 4.1 user manual - which offers an
extensive walkthrough of CollectionSpace functionality - at
http://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/DOC/User+Manual are a great
combination to start with.

  • Wanting to try out the installation process on your own hardware?

If so, I'd strongly recommend trying this with Ubuntu Server 14.04.2 LTS,
rather than Ubuntu 13.10, if you can set up a PC using the former. You can
find disk images for Ubuntu 14.04 at http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.04/
(Ubuntu 13.10 is no longer a supported Ubuntu release, as per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases)

Once you do that, you should be able to run the instructions you reported
running, below, and walk away and let the automated install just run for
about 30 minutes. And then you can complete the couple of "after
installation" steps mentioned at
http://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/UNRELEASED/Automated+installer+for+CollectionSpace+4.1#AutomatedinstallerforCollectionSpace4.1-Afterinstallation,
and you'll have a successfully-installed copy of CollectionSpace available
on your own hardware.

We think we've identified and resolved the problem you encountered under
Ubuntu 13.10. A revised version of the 'bootstrap' script, which you can
download once again from
https://raw.github.com/cspace-puppet/cspace_puppet_bootstrap/master/scripts/bootstrap-cspace-modules.sh,
now addresses that "Could not find executable file 'puppet'" problem.

However, there's a second problem we just now ran into when testing an
installation on Ubuntu Server 13.10 today, and for which there isn't as
easy a fix. So, right now, installation on that version of Ubuntu is
'broken.' (Apparently this problem began in January 2015, when a public
site removed its copy of the Oracle Java 7 package installer for Ubuntu
13.10.) I'll update the CollectionSpace online documentation to reflect
that installs on 13.10 currently aren't working.

  • Trying to get a demonstration or evaluation copy of CollectionSpace up
and running VERY quickly, in your own environment?

If so, it could be helpful to start out with a virtual machine image
that's already got CollectionSpace installed and ready to run. Two
possibilities, after you install the free VirtualBox application (
https://www.virtualbox.org/) on a Windows PC, Macintosh running OS X, or a
Linux PC (including your Ubuntu 13.10 machine):

(CollectionSpace 4.2 - in process on, via Chad Nelson; open this .vdi file
in VirtualBox, and use vagrant/vagrant as username/password when
    logging in)

  • https://berkeley.box.com/s/bo1090neb5h78ere7j29 (CollectionSpace 4.1.1
on Ubuntu 14.10 server, via UC Berkeley's Ray Lee - see the accompanying
readme file for instructions; also, let me know if you would like this but
can't access it for any reason)

  • Want to get an demonstration, evaluation, or development copy of
CollectionSpace up and running, by going through the full installation
process - but on a virtual machine that runs within an application on your
computer, not directly on your own hardware, so you could still do this on
your Ubuntu 13.10 PC? Or even on a PC or Mac at your office or home?

If so, one option might be to install both VirtualBox (see above) and
Vagrant (https://www.vagrantup.com/), then get a Vagrant configuration file
created by LYRASIS's Mark Cooper.

Summary instructions for a Linux/Unix/OS X system:

  • Create a directory.
  • Cd to that directory.
  • Download the file 'Vagrantfile' from
    https://github.com/mark-cooper/cspace_vagrantbox into that directory. (E.g.
right-click or Ctrl-click the Vagrantfile link and choose "Save Link As..."
or equivalent; copy the Vagrantfile into that directory, from your
    Downloads folder, if needed)
  • Within the directory you created in step 1, enter: vagrant up
(This will initiate the automated installer; allow some 30 minutes for
    installation to complete)
  • Log in to the VM by entering: vagrant ssh
(No username/password are likely needed; use vagrant/vagrant if these
    are ever needed)
  • Change to the 'cspace' user account by entering: sudo su cspace.
  • Run CollectionSpace by entering; $CATALINA_HOME/bin/startup.sh
  • Connect to CollectionSpace in your browser (on youn computer, not
    in the VM) via http://10.11.12.45:8180/collectionspace/ui/core/index.html
