Thanks Jeff. I have reviewed the By Laws and do have specific questions which I will share shortly. In the meantime, our new board president (Tom Nash) and I are both trying to familiarize ourselves with NCL as the September meeting was the first meeting we had attended on behalf of COABE. In my new role as Executive Director, I've been asked by our board to serve as COABE's liaison/voting member so appreciate your patience with me. Typically the board minutes and By Laws for an organization are easily accessible and a good starting point when trying to get the lay of the land.

Can you please clarify the public policy committee versus the board of directors? Are they one and the same?

Thanks,

Sharon Bonney

Sharon,

Here is a direct link to the “About Us” page on the NCL site, where, as I mentioned, the link to the bylaws lives:

http://national-coalition-literacy.org/about/

The policy committee is a committee-of-the-whole — any member can participate to whatever extent they are available and interested, and most people don’t have time to be on every call. So there’s no reason to apologize for not being on the call yesterday. COABE was well represented, as Jackie Taylor was with us (and raised some great questions).

We just recently got our online office back up and running, and still getting it organized. We’ll create a publicly accessible link to a folder with the approved board meeting minutes. Right now the approved minutes are not organized in one place. Just bear with us for a bit. NCL is a volunteer endeavor; most of us can only attend to NCL work at night or weekends. If there is a specific issue you are curious about in the meantime, feel free to let me know.

Sorry to hear you’re unfamiliar with NCL's activities. Thankfully COABE has been an active participant at NCL meetings and events over the years I’ve been involved with. The web site, I think, is a pretty good place to review the the last year or so, at least.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your email. I was unable to locate the by laws via the link. Also, I think there is some confusion regarding the public policy committee versus the NCL board. Can you clarify if they are one and the same? Additionally, we would like to familiarize ourselves with the NCL work to date and would like to review board minutes. Where would we be able to find copies of those?

On a related note, thank you to Judy Mortrude for sending the public policy notes over yesterday! I apologize for not being on the call on behalf of COABE but did want to let others know that COABE will also be present at the PIAAC conference next week. We are sending Polly Smith, our public policy chair.

Thanks,

Sharon Bonney

NCL Members,

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and are looking forward to some time off during the upcoming holidays. A couple of quick notes:

  1. Thanks to NCL member Margaret Patterson/Research Allies for organizing our end-of-the-year fundraising campaign, "Adult Education Brings the American Dream in Reach." All of you reading this already contribute a great to NCL — money and time — but if you are so inclined, an additional donation is much appreciated. Or consider asking a friend or colleague to make a donation. As you know, we have a modest budget by design — and we don’t rely heavily on individual donations to sustain our work — but we have demonstrated over the last several year in particular, that we do A LOT of unique and valuable things with the money we receive. There’s no other entity I know of that brings so many different organizations in our field together to share ideas and projects (esp. true of our last two member meetings) or to work together to bring awareness to folks on the Hill about our field, like we do every year with our awards event. I know all of you reading this think this work is valuable — if you could tell just one other person about us and about our campaign, I would consider our effort a success.

Again, as a reminder, here is the link:

  1. I realized just recently after going to look for them that when we rebuilt the web site last year, we didn’t include a link to our bylaws. I have restored this to the “About Us” page. Also, as a reminder —you can access archives to messages sent to this list, including member meeting notes and notes from previous policy meetings, via this link:

Thanks,

Jeff
