People of Ashford! I'm sending this to most of my contacts that I think have
an Ashford connection. Below is a copy of the article I sent to the
Eatonville Dispatch announcing our Knotweed Bending Party in Ashford. It is
coming up on Saturday, May 22nd, beginning at 10am. We will meet at the
Ashford Fire Station. The Fire Station is across the street from the Ashford
Valley Grocery and Gas Station. Hope you can make it. Remember, families are
welcome. Hope to see you there. Thanks. Paul Nerge 360-569-2767
2nd Annual No Knotweed Day
Everyone is invited to the 2nd Annual Knotweed Bending Party scheduled for
Saturday, May 22nd in Ashford. We will be meeting at the Ashford Fire
Station at 10am for initial Knotweed training. People from the Pierce County
Noxious Weed Control Board and the Nisqually River Knotweed Control Project
will be on hand to give initial training on how to get rid of Knotweed as a
private citizen. At 10:30 we will then head out to this years target areas
using vans and carpools. The Knotweed bending volunteers can either follow
along in their vehicles or leave their cars parked at the Fire Station. We
have a scheduled lunch break back at the Fire Station from 12:30 to 1:30pm.
Lunch will be provided. Anyone who only wishes to help for a half day can
either leave us at lunch time, or join us at lunch time and help with the
afternoon bending. We plan to be done around 4:30pm.
Knotweed is not native, and was introduced to the Upper Nisqually many years
ago. Knotweed is a plant that uncontrolled will completely replace all the
native vegetation along a stream bank and significantly degrade the habitat.
Knotweed is spread by small pieces of the plant that float downstream.
Last year we had quite a few people show up for the Knotweed Bending event.
We bent about 97 acres of knotweed in the Copper Creek, Goat Creek and
Nisqually River areas. Last year we even had a couple families that brought
their kids along and they had a great time. It’s a good way for a family to
get out in the woods, have some fun, and help give back to the earth. The
volunteers are lead as a group into the woods and they move along the
Nisqually tributaries, small streams, beaver ponds, etc. and break over or
bend the knotweed as they go. The bending over of the Knotweed helps
tremendously when the professional spaying is done later in the year.
Once again, everyone is welcome. Remember to wear old clothes, and expect to
be in shallow water for a part of the time. You may want to have an extra
pair of shoes along in the car. Any questions call Paul Nerge, the local
coordinator at 360-569-2767.
