Good Evening,
I think I left you in Whataru Bay after a very
rough passage around Cape Reinga and the North
Cape of the North Island. I have been reading
about that area and it seems that in Maori
mythology that spirits of the dead depart the
country for Hawaiki (Maori Ancestral Homeland)
from this area. Perhaps the troubled waters we
encountered were due to us interfering with their
departure.
We set a course from Whataru Bay down the coast
to Whangeroa Harbour. Now this has to be one of
the most beautiful cruising areas in New Zealand.
After passing through a narrow entrance, we found
numerous coves, which would provide excellent
protection in most any weather condition. On the
hillsides were many large lovely homes. We
selected Rere Bay, dropped the hook, and enjoyed
a great nights sleep.
The next morning we continued south for Opua.
However, when we entered the Bay of Islands, with
the sun shinning warmly, we decided not to go
into the harbour. Instead, we anchored in the
lee of a small island and enjoyed an hour soaking
up the sun on the aft deck. The Bay of Islands
is famous as one of the great cruising areas of
the world. I certainly would not disagree, and
look forward to spending the next month poking
around this area.
Shortly after sunrise, we pulled up the anchor
and headed the couple of miles into Opua Marina.
For me, Opua has become a place of decision. I
have three options. 1. Head back to Australia
and continue around the world. 2. Turn North and
West, fighting headwinds and currents back to the
US. 3. Whimp-out and ship the boat back ($26,000
USOuch!) Unless something unforeseen prevents,
I have chosen #2. I do not take this decision
lightly and realize it will be a tough run. Opua
with its modern, well-equipped marina will be a
great place to spend some time getting the boat
ready for the passage back. Later, I will
discuss the logistics and route of this planned
return.
This morning I took Rainer back to Auckland for
his return flight home. Actually, he took me to
Auckland as driving on the left-hand side is not
something my passengers or I enjoy. Actually, I
am getting better at it and stay to the left most
of the time. However, for some reason I always
walk up to the car on the Port (left) side,
unlock the door, and get in. You really feel
pretty stupid when you see the steering wheel off
to the right. So with a casual air, I get out
and walk around the car, hoping no one saw me.
It was great having Rainers help over the past
week. His good humor and knowledge of New
Zealand and its customs has been greatly
appreciated. I look forward to him joining us on
the leg to Tonga. In addition to Rainer, my
nephew Kirk has offered his help from New Zealand
to Hawaii. Kirk is a senior engineering student
and I look forward to his sharp mind and youthful
energy. On July 20, my daughter Wendy will be
flying out from San Francisco for about 10 days.
It will be great to do some local cruising and
exploring the North Island of New Zealand. There
are many exciting events about to take place, and
I am looking forward to the fun and challenges
ahead.
