FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 7, 2017

AUBURN, Wash.-
Marjorie Rommel has served as the Poet Laureate since 2015 and her term will expire at the end of the calendar year. She has had a wonderful impact on the Auburn literary community during her appointment including spearheading Auburn's new national poetry month event "Poets on the Ave," which features talented poets and Poet Laureates from around Washington State.
Nominations are sought for Auburn's next poet laureate and the deadline has extended with geographical requirements broadened to include North Pierce County and South King County for poets that are actively engaged in Auburn' s creative community for at least one year prior to appointment. A poet laureate is a poet officially appointed by Mayor and Council and is invited to compose poems for City occasions and events. An idea that was initially proposed from a community member, and was readily embraced by the Arts Commission.  "This honorary position" notes Arts Commission Chair Colleen Maloney, "Auburn is able to celebrate and showcase literary arts and artists in this community."
The specific criteria for the appointment of the Poet Laureate are based on her/his involvement and commitment to the community, literary excellence and continued pursuit of the craft. During the three-year term the Poet Laureate is expected to share their love of poetry with our city and create occasional poems for specific civic events. Any organization or individual that wishes to nominate a poet for the position of Auburn's First Poet Laureate may submit documents for consideration (Self-nominations not accepted).  Application receipt deadline has been extended to January 25, 2018.

The Poet Laureate Nomination form and overview is available on the City of Auburn Cultural Arts website http://www.auburnwa.gov/arts or by contacting the Parks, Arts and Recreation Department, 253-931-3043, 910 Ninth Street SE, Auburn Washington 98002.
