The other issue with a good motor sailor is that the boat has a long range
under power.  Beebe's passagemaker, although badly under rigged, had this long
range.

Unfortunately there are few pilothouse, motorsailors--either in the cats or
monohulls which truely have the long range under power.  I have a friend who
once had to power across almost the entire Indian Ocean.
I once powered all of the way from Panama to San Diego--no wind.  All so often
we see the power cats with limited fuel and thus limited range.
