Is Your Newfoundland a Good Citizen?
http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs151/1101851326832/img/195.jpg Canine
Good CitizenR Becomes a Title!
As of January 1, 2013, Canine Good CitizenR has become an official AKC title
that can appear on the title records of dogs registered or listed with AKC.
Dog owners who complete the CGC as a Title process may list the suffix "CGC"
after the dog's name.
Since the program began in 1989, CGCT has been considered an "award,"
meaning that it has not been listed on a dog's title record.

DNA Collection a Focus at the National Specialty
DNA http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs049/1101851326832/img/74.jpg The DNA
Collection Clinic at the National Specialty is a great opportunity to assist
health research now, and for the future health of our beloved breed. It is
especially important to build families in the DNA bank- if you are bringing
young dogs whose parents and grandparents have been collected in previous
years please make an extra effort to get them all collected this year on
Thursday, May 2nd between 9 AM and 5 PM. The more Newfoundland samples,
especially families, available in the bank, the more researchers will be
interested in the health problems in our breed.
DNA Swabs for Cystinuria testing will also be available- see

Health Seminar Highlights Cardiac Concerns
http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs151/1101851326832/img/196.jpg The Health
and Longevity committee is pleased to announce an educational talk by
veterinary cardiologist, Dr. Joshua Stern DVM, DACVIM, of North Carolina
State University. Dr Stern's lab focuses on the genetic causes of cardiac
disease in dogs and cats. The Newfoundland Charitable Trust funded a portion
of the study on locating the causative gene for subaortic stenosis in
Newfoundlands, Golden Retrievers, and Rottweilers. Be sure to save some time
at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2013. This is for pet owners and breeders
alike and will focus on Subaortic Stenosis, how to diagnose, and possible
future genetic tests. In addition to the seminar, Dr Stern will also be
offering OFA cardiac exams, including echocardiograms and collecting
research samples. The fees charged will go 100 percent to support veterinary
cardiac research at North Carolina State University.

Newfoundland Club of America
Your NCA Board of Directors recognizes the value and prevalence of social
networking systems, such as FacebookT, email lists, and blogs. Sometimes the
rise of this entirely new class of communication has been accompanied by
what has come to be viewed as cyber-harassment. Those engaged in
cyber-harassment post negative comments and half or fabricated truths, often
in a sarcastic manner, about individuals who cannot defend themselves.
Members of the Newfoundland Club of America should consider social
networking communication as public and, as such, understand that their
comments reflect on themselves and the NCA. Members should consider
carefully what and how they write and are encouraged to stress positive
aspects of education rather than negative or sarcastic comments about
owners, breeders, and/or Newfoundland fanciers.

Is Your Newfoundland a Good Citizen?
<http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs151/1101851326832/img/195.jpg> Canine
Good CitizenR Becomes a Title!
As of January 1, 2013, Canine Good CitizenR has become an official AKC title
that can appear on the title records of dogs registered or listed with AKC.
Dog owners who complete the CGC as a Title process may list the suffix "CGC"
after the dog's name.
Since the program began in 1989, CGCT has been considered an "award,"
meaning that it has not been listed on a dog's title record.

Testing at the National
DNA Collection a Focus at the National Specialty
DNA <http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs049/1101851326832/img/74.jpg> The DNA

<http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs151/1101851326832/img/196.jpg> The Health
and Longevity committee is pleased to announce an educational talk by
veterinary cardiologist, Dr. Joshua Stern DVM, DACVIM, of North Carolina
State University. Dr Stern's lab focuses on the genetic causes of cardiac
disease in dogs and cats. The Newfoundland Charitable Trust funded a portion
of the study on locating the causative gene for subaortic stenosis in
Newfoundlands, Golden Retrievers, and Rottweilers. Be sure to save some time
at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2013. This is for pet owners and breeders
alike and will focus on Subaortic Stenosis, how to diagnose, and possible
future genetic tests. In addition to the seminar, Dr Stern will also be
offering OFA cardiac exams, including echocardiograms and collecting
research samples. The fees charged will go 100 percent to support veterinary
cardiac research at North Carolina State University.

the Committee Directory, and contact Lynne Anderson-Powell, committee
