Akama 05/25/06: Arrival in Australia

We've arrived in Bundaberg after 7 days and 23 hours at sea.

The trip went very well, despite the rather rough weather the first
four days.  But, then we expected that, as our strategy was to leave
on the back of a low with a predicted broad high following it.  This
would give us favourable winds and known weather on the way out,
albeit a bit rough, followed by the maximum number of days in the
high, with its calm weather.  The low lingered a bit longer than we
anticipated, so we got a rough four days instead of the planned two.
But the high was lovely and although the weather charts we received
using the wireless showed possible lows forming, none did.  The only
other rough patch was in Hervey Bay, a large bay leading to Bundaberg.

We arrived in the morning, did very little that day and slept like
babies that night.  Possibly we slept well because we polished off a
bottle of Champagne, which was interesting as we were half into the
bottle when the officials showed up to clear us.  They were rigorous,
but fair and we did not loose too much stuff to the quarantine
officials.  The customs crew came aboard with two Labrador
retrievers.  We were not worried about them finding anything
untoward, as we don't have anything like that.  But, we wondered if
the original owner of the boat might have squirreled away a stash of
something and forgot about it...apparently not.

Yesterday we washed down the boat, made much easier with four of us
working.  We broke out the folding bike and went for a little spin
around the neighbourhood...it turns out that the Bundaberg Port
Marina is rather isolated from town; indeed there is nothing much
around it for about five miles.  Then we slept like babies again!

Today we are going into town to reprovision and see a few of the
sights.  We will also bid farewell to Jan, our Kiwi crew member.
