Dumb question... how does the Cardiac Clinic work? I know that breeders do this to check hearts. Is this somthing that spayed/neutered pet owners should be doing? Can a non show newf have this done, or should they?

Just wanted to let you and the other members of the Northstar Newfoundland Club that, unfortunately, Burke, Chuckles and I are now unable to travel to the St Cloud events this coming weekend. We were looking forward to all the activities but sometimes the family obligations just have to take precedence. I hope that all is a rousing success and a good time for all.We are looking forward to participating in future activities.Burke and Lorraine Zimmerman (and Chuckles).

I am not sure whether you can get a "heart clear" certificate at the clinic
(I should know and will as of Saturday since I am sitting at the booth) but
in general Newfoundlands are more prone to heart disease than the average
dog and it can be useful for an owner to know in advance of any physical
changes in a dog that he/she may have health issues in the future to be
prepared for. Many dogs with heart defects live a normal life of 10 years.

Tammy, yes, unentered, non-show dogs can participate in the heart clinic.
I had Ebony done there years ago. It was for my peace of mind since she
didn't come from a good breeder. You can then choose to submit it to OFA
to be entered in the database, but that is up to you. There is an
additional fee to have it recorded with OFA.
Wish we could make it! Good luck to all exhibitors!!

What you will get is a form that can be sent in for OFA certification. If
the Doctor signs off on the form the heart is good or the Doctor may refer
you for a more intense exam.
