We haven't got everything fixed up yet, and the SailMail
system is one of the things left on the to-do list. But
we are leaving anyway! We plan to move from Alameda to
Sausalito tomorrow (Tuesday) and have a last-supper in a
local restaurant. Wednesday early AM we head to the fuel
dock, and then west out the Golden Gate. Next stop is
Hilo, Hawaii, in about 11 days.
We'll try to send updates along the way, but right now
SailMail is not working well, and recent sun-spots have
apparently made a mess of many of the SSB radio bands.
For those that don't know, Osprey is sitting just a few
dozen yards up the dock from us. Alan Calloway from the
PUP list is also planning a Wednesday departure, so we
will be buddy-boating. Osprey is a little bit slower
than Gentle Wind (7.5 vs 8.25 knots) so the distance
between us will grow over time, but even at the end of
the trip we'll only be 200 miles or so apart. Alan is
heading directly for Honolulu, while we're stopping in
Hilo first (for refueling).
If anyone wants to chat with us, you can always call
the Iridium satellite phone! Incoming calls are free
to the boat (caller pays) so you can talk as long as
you want! We'll have the phone on 24x7 so ring us at
+881 631-550-822
We'll be signing off the list for a while...

If you have one of the SSB's that they support (they like ICOM) they will
sell you there technical support and get you going - usually over the phone.
I assume that you have already bought the Pactor III modem. They also sell
connectivity cable kits.
A sailing buddy of mine had problems prior to his Caribbean 1500 rally. Two
other skippers with Sailmail up on their ICOM's got him working in a few
hours.

I talked to Don at HF Radio and they "don't touch
Furuno". :( I had the system checked out by a
very highly recommended local Ham who pronounced
our SSB "healthy". When the solar flares stop, we
should be just fine.
Thanks for the contact info.
